What is Stage 1?

BT Moto has used its extensive experience with BMW ECUs to develop the Stage 1 ECU calibration for the 2021+ BMW S1000R. Both European and US models are restricted from the factory, with the US version being one of the most heavily restricted BMW litre bikes.

The Stage 1 software addresses these factory limitations to provide sharper throttle response, smoother operation and improved performance throughout the RPM range.

What is restricted from the factory?

• Throttle control: Electronic throttle restrictions create a lazy response during initial throttle application and reduce power in certain gears and RPM ranges.

• Exhaust valve: The exhaust valve remains partially closed to reduce noise, resulting in a loss of performance.

• Fueling: The 2021+ BMW S1000R is calibrated relatively rich from the factory and benefits from optimized fueling.

• Heat management: The S1000R can produce a considerable amount of heat and run at relatively high engine temperatures.

What does BT Moto adjust?

• Throttle control: Factory throttle restrictions are removed, allowing the engine to deliver its available performance with a sharper and more direct response.

• Exhaust valve: The factory exhaust valve remains functional but receives optimized control. This retains its benefits at lower RPM while allowing it to open when maximum performance is required.

• Fueling: The target air/fuel ratio is optimized to improve performance, drivability and idle quality.

• Heat management: The cooling fans are programmed to activate earlier. Combined with the corrected fueling, this helps the engine run cooler and more consistently.

Important information

BT Moto Stage 1 tuning is certified as street legal in all 50 US states under CARB EO D-868.

As of July 2025, BT Moto no longer offers extended rev-limiter options with its Stage 1 tuning. Stage 1 is designed to retain OEM dealer-level serviceability and to comply with BMW’s warranty standards.

For track and racing applications, BT Moto recommends upgrading to its more comprehensive Stage 2 calibration.

For maximum results, BT Moto recommends combining this calibration with its velocity stacks.
